The Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is offering multiple fully funded PhD and Postdoctoral Fellow positions under the supervision of Dr. Yue Zhu. These positions focus on cutting-edge research in inverter-dominated power systems, including stability analysis, control optimization, and AI/ML-enhanced system modeling.
Research Areas
The research will cover the following topics:
- Dynamics and stability analysis of inverter-based resource (IBR)-dominated power systems.
- Grid-following and grid-forming IBR control optimization.
- Data-driven online system modeling and monitoring enhanced by AI/ML.
- Comprehensive system strength assessment for new IBR connections.
- Tools development, including software and experimental test benches for IBR-dominated power systems.
PhD Positions
- Up to 5 fully funded positions (open to both local and overseas candidates).
Requirements:
- A Master’s degree in a relevant field (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Control Systems) from a recognized university.

Scholarship Benefits:
- Full funding for 4 years.
- Monthly Stipend:
- HK$18,700 (standard).
- HK$19,200 (for candidates with exceptional qualifications).

Postdoctoral Fellow Positions
- Up to 2 positions with an initial contract of 18 months (extensions possible based on performance).
Requirements:
- A PhD degree in a relevant field from a recognized university.
- Research experience in the group’s focus areas.
- Preference for candidates with publications in top-tier journals and conferences (e.g., IEEE Transactions).
- Experience with MATLAB, PSCAD, RTLAB, and hardware experiments with IBR is preferred.
Salary:
- Starting from HK$300,000 per year.
