Project Title: Influence of Climatic Aridity on the Dynamics of Standing Dead Trees
Are you passionate about forest ecology and climate change? The Vanderwel Lab at the University of Regina is seeking a highly motivated individual for an MSc or PhD project investigating how climatic aridity affects the dynamics of standing dead trees in western Canada. Join us to contribute to critical research on forest carbon balance and climate change impacts!
Project Background
In recent decades, increasing aridity has led to significant forest carbon losses across western Canada due to reduced forest productivity and increased tree mortality. This is particularly evident in the Prairie region, where drought-sensitive tree species face challenges from high summer moisture deficits.
This project will:
- Examine how moisture availability influences the density and fall rate of standing dead trees in a mixed forest landscape.
- Utilize a 10-year dataset from annual unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys to analyze standing dead tree dynamics during periods of abnormally dry weather.
- Provide insights into the future impacts of climate change on forest carbon balance.
