Project Title: Climate Aridity Effects on Dead Tree Dynamics
Do you have an interest in forest ecology, climate change, and sustainable forest management? At the University of Regina, the Vanderwel Lab is looking for an MSc or PhD student to study the effect of climate change in western Canada. The research will provide fundamental insight into forest carbon balance and the impacts of climate change over decades in boreal and temperate forests.
Join work with some cool new UAV (drone) technology, sharpen your skills in analyzing long-term ecological datasets, and publish in top-tier scientific journals with us!
Project Background
Climate change is exacerbating drought across western Canada. Snags are critical to carbon cycling, wildlife habitat, and forest regeneration, but how snag dynamics respond to changing moisture conditions is poorly understood.
This project will:
- Examine how moisture availability influences snag density and fall rates in mixed forests.
- Analyze a 10-year UAV dataset to track snag persistence during extreme drought events.
- Model future impacts of climate change on forest carbon balance and ecosystem resilience.
- The findings will inform sustainable forest management and climate adaptation strategies.
Position Details
- Start Date: September 2025 or January 2026 (flexible)
- Location: Ground–air interface impacts on soil physical properties after a rain event at the Fescue Prairie, Saskatchewan, Canada
- Supervisor: Dr. Mark Vanderwel
- Funding:
- MSc: $26,000/year for 2 years
- PhD: $28,000/year for 4 years
- Additional Support: Use travel funding, fieldwork allowances, and access to drone equipment.

For MSc Applicants:
- Four (4)-year degree in Ecology, Biology, Forestry, Environmental Science or a related field.
- Strong quantitative skills (experience with R, Python, or GIS preferred).
- Enthusiasm for fieldwork (experience with forest surveys or remote sensing is an asset).
For PhD Applicants:
- A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
- Demonstrated research experience (e.g., publications, thesis work).
- Proficiency in statistical modeling and ecological data analysis.
Ideal candidates will have:
- An interest in forest ecology and climate change research.
- Capability to work independently and as a research team.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
