Walsh Scholars Ref Number: 2023012
Are you passionate about climate change, plant diversity, and sustainable agriculture? Join the Teagasc Walsh Scholars Programme for an exciting MSc research opportunity exploring how plant diversity can help grasslands adapt to weather variations. This fully funded scholarship is a collaboration between Teagasc, Maynooth University, and Trinity College Dublin.
Project Background
Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as summer droughts and winter waterlogging. These events threaten the sustainability of intensively managed grasslands.
This research aims to:
- Investigate how plant diversity can improve grassland resistance to environmental stress.
- Develop recommendations for species mixtures that enhance yield stability under extreme weather conditions.
- Utilize data from 26 countries through the LegacyNet consortium to analyze the impact of species diversity on grassland yield and variability.
The findings will provide practical solutions for adapting grasslands to climate change, ensuring sustainable forage production.
Main Activities
- Data Collection and Analysis: Use advanced statistical models (e.g., Diversity-Interactions models, generalized additive mixed models) to analyze grassland yield and weather data.
- Publication of Results: Contribute to scientific publications and present findings at national and international conferences.
- Field Visits: Opportunities to visit experimental sites and collaborate with international researchers.
